The number of passengers travelling by train in the first nine months of 2025 totalled 48.993 million, down 8.8% compared with the same period in 2024, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
According to the same source, passenger-kilometres fell by 9.8% over the period in question.
As regards rail freight transport, the volume of goods recorded a decline of 8.4% compared with the same period last year, with growth reported only in transit transport, which rose by 53.6%. In total, 30.113 million tonnes of goods were transported, of which 79.3% was domestic transport.
Significant shares of total freight transported were recorded for the following categories: coke and refined petroleum products (26%), and coal and lignite; crude oil and natural gas (17.7%).
In terms of freight movement, 35.2% of the total was accounted for by coke and refined petroleum products, while 13% consisted of agricultural products, hunting and forestry products, and fish and other fishing products.
The technical and economic indicators relating to the use of the rolling stock in rail transport that recorded positive developments compared with the period 1 January-30 September 2024 were: the average turnaround time of freight wagons (days), up 15.7%; the average commercial speed of freight trains (km/h), up 1.7%; and the average daily distance travelled by passenger wagons (km/day) and the average static load of freight wagons (tonnes/axle), both up 0.4%.
Negative developments compared with the same period last year were reported for the following indicators: the average daily distance travelled by freight wagons (km/day), down 16.7%; the average daily distance travelled by locomotives used in freight transport (km/day), down 16.6%; loaded wagons entering from abroad (thousand wagons), down 10.8%; wagons loaded on the CFR network (thousand wagons), down 6.1%; the average gross weight of freight trains (tonnes/train), down 3.5%; and the average commercial speed of passenger trains (km/h), down 1.4%, among others.
