Nine influenza-related deaths Jannuary 5 to 11

Nine people died across the country last week due to influenza, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported on Thursday.

Since the start of the season, 20 deaths caused by influenza have been reported.

'In the week 5-11 January, 73,880 cases of respiratory infections (clinical influenza, acute upper respiratory tract infections and pneumonia) were reported, representing 21.1% more cases compared with the previous week (61,016) and 18.7% fewer cases compared with the same week of the previous season (90,877). The negative variation compared with the calculated average of 99,738 cases from recent seasons (2018-2025, excluding the pandemic seasons) was 25.9%,' the quoted source informs.

During the same period, 8,585 cases of clinical influenza were recorded nationwide, compared with 10,570 in the previous week, 1.5 times more than in the same week of the previous season (5,876) and 2.6 times more than the average of the last five seasons (3,353).

In the same interval, 172 cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded, 37 with influenza virus AH3, 8 with influenza virus AH1 and 127 with unsubtyped influenza virus A.

By 11 January, a total of 1,278,540 influenza vaccinations had been recorded in the National Electronic Vaccination Register, of which 1,252,530 were administered to population groups eligible for reimbursement under the compensated scheme, including 6,021 influenza vaccinations administered in authorised community pharmacies.
