The new heads of the General Prosecutor's Office, the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) and the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) begin their three-year mandates on Wednesday.

These are Cristina Chiriac - Prosecutor General of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Ioan-Viorel Cerbu - chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate, and Codrin-Horatiu Miron - chief prosecutor of the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism.

Also on Wednesday, Alex-Florin Florenta takes up the position of deputy chief prosecutor of DIICOT, and Marius-Ionel Stefan the position of deputy chief prosecutor of the DNA.

Last Wednesday, President Nicusor Dan announced that he had signed the decrees appointing the heads of the major prosecutor's offices, following proposals received from Justice Minister Radu Marinescu.

'After this moment, my expectation from the prosecutor's offices and, implicitly, from their heads is a reinvigoration of activity in order to meet Romanians' expectations, because Romanians see corruption and high-level corruption in their daily interactions with state authorities. High-level corruption is handled by the DNA, while everyday corruption is handled by the General Prosecutor's Office. From DIICOT, I expect the dismantling of major drug trafficking networks and large-scale tax evasion networks. It goes without saying that drugs are an extremely harmful social phenomenon affecting an increasing number of Romanians, and tax evasion affects the state budget,' Nicusor Dan told a press conference held at the Cotroceni Palace.

The President added that his expectation from the three newly appointed chief prosecutors is, first and foremost, that they maintain constant communication with the prosecutors under their authority.

'They must communicate in the public space, which, unfortunately, their predecessors did not do. (...) If we speak in particular about the General Prosecutor's Office, there is the blockage at the special section for investigating magistrates. And I have a message for the body of prosecutors, because being a prosecutor is a vocation. You want to become a prosecutor because you want to eliminate crime, you want to fight the criminal activity that affects the lives of your fellow citizens. And, unfortunately, it has happened that our judicial system has turned prosecutors into a kind of officials burdened by thousands of cases, who no longer have the necessary time to look at the cases that truly have an impact on society. One of the concerns and one of the important discussions I will have with the new heads of the prosecutor's offices will be about how to strike a balance between this routine work, which is necessary, how we can simplify and standardise it, and how we can still leave prosecutors the time to deal with those important cases that have an impact on society,' the head of state said.
