The National Strategy for Romania's Durable Development will be completed by 1 October, state advisor Laszlo Borbely, coordinator of the Department for Durable Development within the Romanian Government's General Secretariat (SGG) told the conference "Romania's Development Strategy", organised by the Bursa newspaper in partnership with Romania's Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
"We had an issue, we conceived many things between 1996 and 2000 but they stayed on paper most of the times because our priorities were not taken into account. They are all priorities, but if you follow all of them through without distinguishing which are more important and you do not have an important strategy, you cannot put them into practice. Well, now we have that chance through the Strategy because I would like to announce you that on 1 October we will complete with all the approvals the new Romania's Durable Development Strategy. It is on the website of the Durable Development Department which I have been honoured to lead since last year's May. Hence, it is a Department for Durable Development within the Romanian Government's General Secretariat (SGG), with nine, very eager and enthusiastic people who have helped me complete the revision of Romania's Development Strategy," Laszlo Borbely said.
According to him, Sweden is the first in a list of 157 countries and has 83 indicators. Romania mustn't have 200, 60-70 indicators are needed and we can follow them, the important thing, however, is how we do that.
Laszlo Borbely specified that the indicators are highly important because in their absence durable development cannot be quantified. At the UN level there is a set of 241 indicators and a set proposed by Eurostat of around 100 indicators. Romania's National Institute of Statistics has 103 indicators of which 23-45 can be daily monitored.
