Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu on Friday stated in Alba Iulia that Romania is not currently in the position of being faced with the possibility of triggering Article 7, adding that he noticed the most vocal European politicians targeting our country are those who aspire to certain offices.
"I must say very precisely that Romania is not currently in the situation of being faced with the possibility of triggering Article 7. We are talking right now about the debate that will take place in the European Parliament on Romania, on the rule of law, on the recent protests. Similar debates took place before, with very many states participating and it is normal that such discussions exist. Each party will present its standpoint," said Victor Negrescu.
The Minister added that in the European Parliament "there are certain right-wing parties, extremist parties, which can take the floor and say various things," about Romania or the Romanian governments.
According to him, what is important is to exist a dialogue "I believe that it will allow us not to end in such position and also to limit the political ambitions or European political disputes, which, inevitably, can involve Romania or other member states," specified Victor Negrescu.
The mechanism that makes the object of Article 7 of the EU Treaty, also called the EU's institutional "nuclear option" is the last solution there is in exercising pressures on a country where the European institutions believe there is a risk of a "severe and repeated" violation of the EU values, including of the rule of law.
