AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: Romania has been a steadfast ally for over 20 years and plays a strategic role on the Eastern Flank, including the Black Sea, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in Brussels on Thursday, during a joint press conference with President Nicusor Dan.

Rutte, who had talks with Nicusor Dan, said that since the announcement of the Eastern Sentry programme, NATO brought together more allied forces to protect our Eastern Flank.

'We are vigilant and prepared to defend every inch of allied territory,' the NATO Secretary General said. He also welcomed the fact that Romania has reached defence spending of 2.5% of GDP.

'Romania has been a steady supporter of Ukraine, and I commend you for having signed three bilateral agreements with Ukraine last week,' Mark Rutte added.

He reiterated allied support: 'We count on Romania, and Romania can always count on NATO,' Rutte stressed.
