Over 1,000 senior citizens have been helped to acquire digital skills through 430 workshops held as part of the Hi Digital - Connecting Generations in the Digital World project, run by the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation.

According to a press release the foundation sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, now in its second edition, the project took place between March and December 2025 in Bucharest and a further 15 localities across the country and was aimed at people over the age of 65 who owned a smartphone and wished to learn how to use it more effectively.

'For the second consecutive year, the project supported 1,010 seniors aged over 65, who had free access to a series of practical digital education workshops. A total of 430 workshops, with 10 specially designed themes, delivered over 942 hours of digital education, focused on understanding basic smartphone settings, calls and text messages, photography and cloud services, online browsing, mobile applications and maps, online shopping, communication applications and email, safe smartphone use, social networks and internet banking,' the quoted source mentions.

Through a train-the-trainers programme, 22 people, including 10 seniors, became mentors in their communities, while 150 volunteers from all 16 communities dedicated more than 1,000 hours to supporting seniors and trainers, and 4,372 indirect beneficiaries, including families, friends and communities, benefited from interaction with digitally empowered seniors.

The project involved 10 local non-governmental organisations from 15 localities: Arad, Bacau, Baia de Fier, Baia Mare, Buciumeni, Campia Turzii, Galati, Hobita, Nucet, Polovragi, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Targu Jiu, Turda and Turnu Magurele. Within these communities, 971 seniors benefited from the development of digital skills by participating in 404 workshops.

In Bucharest, 26 workshops were organised, benefiting 39 seniors. During these meetings, participants received not only information on how to use their mobile phones to cope in an increasingly technologised society, but also opportunities to expand their social networks and remain active and connected with people of the same age.

'We aim for the project to continue in 2026 as well, so that as many seniors as possible can benefit from digitalisation activities, an essential component for their integration into an increasingly technologised society and for ensuring a higher quality of life,' the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation further says.
