The reopening, following modernisation, of the Romanian-Ukrainian border crossing point at Sighetu Marmatiei and the opening of a new crossing at Remeti-Iablunivka were discussed on Wednesday in Uzhhorod, during a meeting between representatives of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration and the prefect and president of the Maramures County Council, attended by Ambassador of Romania to Ukraine Victor Micula, the Romanian Consulate in Solotvyno reported.

"The talks focused on identifying and developing new joint projects in infrastructure, culture and tourism, as well as launching initiatives aimed at increasing the volume and diversifying cross-border cooperation projects between Romania and Ukraine," the diplomatic mission said in a post on its Facebook page.

According to the same source, the meeting also addressed technical issues related to the opening of the new border crossing at Sighetu Marmatiei.

"A number of technical aspects concerning the operationalisation, in the near future, of the new Sighetu Marmatiei-Biserica Alba (Bila Tserkva) border crossing were clarified, while topics related to the opening of a new crossing point at Remeti-Iablunivka were also discussed," the Romanian Consulate in Solotvyno added.

In the vicinity of Sighetu Marmatiei, a new road bridge crossing the Tisa River, along with buildings for the Border Police and Customs and access roads to the new crossing point, is at an advanced stage of construction. The investment, valued at nearly EUR 25 million and financed from European funds, is due to be commissioned this year.

Road traffic between Romania and Ukraine on the Sighetu Marmatiei-Solotvyno connection has been carried out since 2000 via a wooden and metal bridge, with a single traffic lane and two pedestrian walkways. Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, traffic increased significantly, and the structure of the bridge was affected, making repairs necessary.

Temporarily, Ukrainian Railways also operated a broad-gauge line on the Sighetu Marmatiei-Valea Viseului route, but passenger services to the two destinations have been suspended.

Access to and from Ukraine in the area is also possible via the Halmeu border crossing point, in Satu Mare County.
