The League of Associations of Agricultural Producers in Romania (LAPAR) is calling on state institutions to adopt a national negotiating mandate to define Romania's position in the European decision-making process, in the context of votes cast by Romanian politicians on the EU-Mercosur agreement.
'The League of Associations of Agricultural Producers in Romania is calling for the adoption of a National Negotiating Mandate to guide Romania's position within European decisions with an impact on agriculture, the economy and the business environment,' the organisation said in a press release.
LAPAR President Nicu Vasile argues that the lack of a unified Romanian position in negotiations in Brussels has led to the acceptance of policies that have affected the competitiveness of Romanian farmers and the stability of the rural environment.
'States that succeed in Brussels negotiate on the basis of a clear mandate. Romania, in its absence, ends up implementing European policies without adapting them to national economic realities,' Nicu Vasile stressed.
According to LAPAR, European environmental, agricultural and trade policies should be supported only if the principles of reciprocity, proportionality and fair treatment for farmers in member states are respected.
The organisation believes that an institutionally assumed national negotiating mandate would allow Romania to defend its economic interests more effectively and to contribute constructively to European Union decisions without sacrificing strategic sectors.
At the same time, the LAPAR president underlined that agriculture is an essential pillar of the Romanian economy, and that the lack of a unified representation strategy risks deepening existing vulnerabilities.
