On a state visit to Italy on Tuesday, Romania's President Klaus Iohannis met Speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Roberto Fico to discuss furthering economic co-operation between Romania and Italy, including Italian investment in Romania.
According to the Presidential Administration, during the meeting with Roberto Fico, Iohannis pointed to the excellent relations between the two countries and showed that Romania counts on the very good collaboration with Italy when holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2019. He also presented the main files and challenges of the Romanian presidency of the EU Council.
"President Klaus Iohannis highlighted the importance of the Romanian community in Italy and the Italian business community in Romania, and encouraged furthering economic co-operation, including Italian investment Romania."
At the same time, Iohannis and Fico discussed the relevance of bilateral parliamentary diplomacy. Addressing the consolidation of the European project, Klaus Iohannis highlighted "the need for the European Union to become an active and relevant external actor in its neighbourhood, especially in complex cases that generate security challenges for the union, with a view to finding sustainable solutions, for example to the phenomenon of migration."
The third day of Klaus Iohannis' state visit to Italy included laying a wreath at Altare della Patria, the altar of the fatherland, and the farewell ceremony extended by Italy's President Sergio Mattarella.
Later, President Iohannis attended the opening of the Romania - Italy Business Forum at the headquarters of Confindustria, the General Confederation of Italian Industry, followed by a meeting with the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, and a meeting with representatives of the Romanian community in Italy.
