Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete declared on Tuesday that savings in the healthcare system are being made "in other areas", not in terms of salaries or incomes of medical and auxiliary personnel.

"I knew that during this period all the ministries are working on the budget for next year, which we are doing. As proof, tomorrow there will be a meeting at the Government with each minister separately to discuss the budget by area. The discussion with reducing the salary fund is not new, it is old. (...) I have said every time and I say it now: in the healthcare system, savings are made in other areas, not in the salaries or income of medical personnel, who are not paid at the level of 2026 anyway. Here, I am talking about the payment of on-call hours. It would be the worst (to cut salaries), in the context in which there are hospitals where we do not have staff to cover the guards, to also lay off existing staff or those who work more guards than they should in order to cover the norm", the minister explained on Antena 3 TV station.

According to him, the reduction in the salary fund can be made on certain administrative components, without affecting the medical and auxiliary personnel in healthcare units.

"Healthcare has an administrative component - the Ministry of Health, Public Health Directorates and so on - and it has the medical area. Of course, the reduction of the salary fund can be made on the administrative component without affecting the activity of the medical and auxiliary personnel in the health units", said Rogobete.

He added that measures have already been taken in the healthcare system that have saved several billion lei.

"Healthcare has done its job. We have already had measures through which we have saved several billions within the system that will be reallocated and reinvested to make this system functional. I have not yet had any discussion on this topic with the prime minister. After all, the Government is led by the prime minister. We are waiting for these meetings, these decisions, let's see what the budget will look like for this year. Of course, based on all these indicators, we can reach a conclusion and go public to say what we will do, how we will do it or how it was done", Minister Rogobete said.
