The Herastrau Park will be named "King Mihai I", according to a draft decision adopted on Tuesday by the General Council of the Bucharest Municipality (CGMB), upon the proposal of the General Mayor.
Moreover, CGMB also adopted a draft decision saying that a part of the Kiseleff Boulevard, between Free Press Square and the Triumph Arch could also be named after the late King Mihai I, upon the proposal of the National Liberal Party (PNL) group.
The General Mayor, Gabriela Firea, said that she supported both projects.
"The Herastrau Park was first of all arranged during the ruling of Carol II. I received a draft last night by which Mrs Mayor wants to name it "King Mihai I", while she had already announced that Victoria Square will also receive the late King's name. Since we believe that it is not proper to change the name of Victoria Square, which was named like this after the Independence War of 1877, we came with this proposal to name the Kiseleff Boulevard, between Free Press Square and the Triumph Arch could also be named after the late King Mihai I. Both projects will be on today's meeting agenda," said liberal Ciprian Ciucu, general councilor, before the CGMB meeting.
He also mentioned that the Kiselff Boulevard stretches between the Free Press Square and the Victoriei Square and that the Liberals' proposal was to name it King Mihai I only between the Free Press Square and the Triumph Arch.
