The Romanian Academy will host a major event on Wednesday and Thursday dedicated to the scientific research carried out within its institutes and research centres.

The event will take place at the Academy's Aula, starting at 9:00, and is part of a series marking the 160th anniversary of the founding of Romania's highest scientific and cultural institution.

Research achievements across the academic system will be presented by the heads of the Academy's scientific sections, covering a broad range of fields, from the humanities to technical sciences, approached both individually and in inter- and transdisciplinary frameworks. These include philology and literature, history and archaeology, mathematics, information science and technology, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, geography and geonomy, engineering sciences, agronomy and forestry, economics, legal and social sciences, philosophy, theology, psychology and education, as well as theatre, music, film, visual arts and architecture.

The scientific conference will be followed by a special session featuring 11 invited lectures, to be delivered on Thursday afternoon by honorary members of the Romanian Academy from abroad, affiliated with universities and research institutions in France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United States and the Republic of Moldova.

The Romanian Academy is the country's leading institution dedicated to fundamental research.

Its research network comprises more than 70 institutes and research centres coordinated by its scientific sections, covering the entire country, from Bucharest to Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Timisoara, Craiova, Sibiu and Targu Mures. These institutes provide direction for long-term fundamental research projects, often spanning generations of researchers.

Some of these institutes have a century-long tradition and have played a key role in consolidating national identity, particularly through the standardisation and cultivation of the Romanian language and the study of national history. More than ten academic institutes were established in Transylvania immediately after the Great Union of 1918, at the initiative of Ferdinand I of Romania, as part of a unifying cultural policy.

At present, several institutes of the Romanian Academy have been classified by the European Commission as centres of excellence, with strong international recognition in fields such as chemistry, biology, geosciences, physics, as well as history and linguistics. These performances are supported by more than 2,000 certified researchers involved in large-scale international, inter- and transdisciplinary projects.
