Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete announced on Thursday that exceptions will be introduced to the rule on non-payment of the first day of medical leave, in order to protect vulnerable patients.
He said that the Health Ministry has completed a draft emergency ordinance, now entering public consultation, which sets out clear protection mechanisms for patients who truly depend on medical leave.
"I have said since the beginning of the year that the measure on medical leaves and the non-payment of the first day must be nuanced and correctly applied, not enforced as a blanket rule. There are situations with no room for interpretation - cancer patients, people with rare diseases, chronic patients and other categories who genuinely rely on this support. Explicit exceptions will be introduced where the situation is clear. These corrections will be made directly by the Health Ministry so that patients who truly need medical leave are protected," Rogobete wrote on Facebook.
He added that while the economic impact of the measure is important for the sustainability of the public system, it will not take precedence over people's health.
"That is why we completed an emergency ordinance that introduces clear protection methodologies. It corrects past excesses and eliminates situations in which vulnerable patients could have been affected by the lack of regulation," the minister said.
