A Romanian citizen detained in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for more than a year has been released and is expected to return home shortly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday.
''The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the release of a Romanian citizen who has been held in Venezuela for over a year. The Ministry also thanks the EU Delegation in Caracas, with which Romanian authorities have cooperated closely since the case was reported, both in providing consular assistance and in promoting the citizen's release. We equally express appreciation for the support offered by partner states, particularly the Czech Republic, in facilitating the Romanian's return," the Ministry said in a statement.
According to the Ministry, the Romanian national is currently in Venezuela under the care of representatives of the EU Delegation in Caracas and is due to arrive in Romania in the coming period.
The case has been monitored by the Ministry since October 2024, with the Consular Department taking constant steps in relation to Venezuelan authorities, the EU Delegation in Caracas, and the individual's family - both to ensure consular assistance and protection, and to secure his release and repatriation.
