Fitch Ratings will publish its announcement on Romania's sovereign rating on February 13, and the government is counting not only on maintaining the rating but also on improving the country's performance in the future, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said after meeting on Tuesday morning with representatives of the agency at the Government headquarters.
"Fitch will release the announcement on the assessment of Romania's rating on February 13, after the close of the markets, and we expect a new confirmation of the credibility acquired in the last six months. As I have already emphasized: in the future, we are counting not only on maintaining the rating, but on improving the country's performance and rating," the minister wrote on Facebook.
During the meeting, the Romanian officials presented the measures that enabled the correction of last year's budget deficit, which stood at 7.65% of GDP, below the 8.4% target.
"We emphasized that the deficit cut was achieved simultaneously with a record level of investments, through budget discipline and coherent decisions in the second half of the year. We also discussed the economic and fiscal outlook for 2026, with a focus on the role of European funding - NRRP and the SAFE mechanism - in supporting public investments and reducing the state's financing costs. These instruments are very important for maintaining the development pace and for consolidating financial stability. The dialogue confirmed investors' confidence in Romania's economic direction, based on credible measures, clear reforms and predictability. We continue on this path with the goal of strengthening macroeconomic stability and creating better conditions for the economy and for people," Nazare added.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare and State Treasury Director General Stefan Nanu took part in the talks with the rating agency's representatives.
According to a government release, the meeting is part of the periodic evaluation of Romania's economic and fiscal developments.
In August last year, Fitch maintained Romania's sovereign rating at BBB- minus, with a negative outlook.
