Final energy consumption in Romania down 0.7pct 11 months into 2025

Final energy consumption in Romania decreased by 0.7% in the first 11 months of 2025, year-over-year, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Between January 1 and November 30, 2025, primary energy sources increased by 4.2%, and electricity sources increased by 5%, both year-over year.

INS data reveal that the main primary energy sources totalled 31.014 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), up 1.237 million toe, from one year to another.

At the same time, domestic production amounted to 15.088 million toe, down 2.5%, and imports amounted to 15.926 million toe, up 11.4%.

According to official statistics, electricity sources were standing at 63.236 billion kWh, up 3.036 billion.

Thermal power plants generated15.561 billion kWh, down 1.1% from the first 11 months of 2024, while hydropower plants produced 11.001 billion kWh, down 18%.

Also, nuclear-electric power plants increased their output by 1.3%, to 10.024 billion kWh.

At the same time, wind power plants' production decreased by 209.5 million kWh, to 5.403 billion kWh, and the solar energy produced in photovoltaic systems increased to 4.438 billion kWh.

Final energy consumption in the first 11 months of 2024 was standing at 45.652 billion kWh, down 0.7% from the same period in 2024, with the final energy consumption by businesses and public lighting declining 1.1% each, as household consumption increased by 0.4%.

Romania's electricity exports were standing at 13.091 billion kWh, up 3.231 billion kWh, and own technological consumption in networks and stations jumped to 139.7 million kWh from a previous 4.492 billion kWh.
