Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea on Friday announced he will present "a lie" that was officially conveyed to the European Commission.
When asked, before the meeting of the National Executive Committee (CExN) of the PSD, what was his opinion about the fact that in the recent time the European Commission and the European officials say they are very well informed about the situation in Romania, Dragnea replied: "I have a very good opinion. For instance, we are going to present in the next days a lie officially sent from here and I think that it is good they know it. I believe that, what is important for us and for the Commission, as we also said in the letter that we sent (to the EC - editor's note) is to have a relation based on cooperation and accurate information."
The PSD leader said he had no clue whether the future report on the Mechanism of Verification and Cooperation will reflect the recent misunderstandings existing between Romania and the European Commission with respect to the Justice laws, the Criminal Code and the ministers facing legal issues.
The European Commission on Wednesday declared itself concerned about the recent developments in Romania and asked the Parliament in Bucharest to reconsider changes in the justice field.
"We are watching with much concern what is happening in Romania right now. The independence of the Romanian judiciary and its capacity to efficiently fight corruption represent the foundation stones for a strong Romania in the European Union," shows a joint statement of the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and of the First Vice-President Frans Timmermans.
After this, Speaker of the Deputies Chamber and of PSD, Liviu Dragnea, and Senate Speaker and President of ALDE (Alliance of Democratic Liberals), Calin Popescu Tariceanu, sent a common letter to the officials of the European Commission showing, among other things, that they are concerned of the "incorrect manner" in which the Commission was informed "with respect to the transparence of the debate on justice in Romania."
In this document, Dragnea and Tariceanu explained that the drafting and examination of the draft laws observed all constitutional exigencies and that they also took into account the recommendations of the European Commission from the Mechanism of Cooperation and Verification with respect to the independence and reform of the judiciary.
