Heineken Romania has completed a major investment of approximately 12 million euros in modern technologies at its breweries in Craiova and Ungheni (Mures County), accelerating the transition toward low-carbon production and optimized energy consumption, the company announced on Thursday.

According to the release, the initiative aims to reduce energy use and increase production efficiency by modernizing equipment and installing high-capacity heat pump systems designed to recover residual heat from industrial processes.

The project was implemented over nine months in 2025, without interrupting production. The total investment amounts to roughly 12 million euros, part of which comes from non-reimbursable NRRP funds.

"The project, carried out together with Engie Building Solutions, part of Engie Romania, falls into the category of advanced energy-efficiency solutions applied in the Romanian beer industry in 2025. The investment brings a structural change in how thermal energy is generated and used at the Craiova and Ungheni breweries. The new installations allow the production of hot water used directly in pasteurization - one of the most important and energy-intensive stages of beer production. Through this integration, processes become more efficient, more stable and far less dependent on conventional energy sources," the release notes.

Based on the energy audit, the solution is expected to reduce total energy consumption in specific processes by over 40% compared with 2022, while preventing the generation of approximately 3,000 tons of CO2 annually (Scope 1 and 2, market-based), calculated according to the GHG Protocol. This contributes to Heineken's Net Zero Production target.

The new infrastructure also enables the integration of future decarbonization technologies and facilitates access to new green financing.

Heineken is the world's largest brewer by international presence and a global leader in premium and non-alcoholic brands. Best known for the Heineken brand, the group's portfolio includes more than 300 international, regional and local beer and cider brands.

Heineken has been present in Romania since 2003, with a diverse portfolio produced mainly at its breweries in Craiova, Ungheni and Miercurea Ciuc. The company employs more than 1,000 people, and around 70% of its ingredients are sourced from local suppliers.

The Engie Romania group operates in natural gas distribution and supply, renewable energy production, electricity supply, as well as green solutions and technical services for gas installations and heating systems. Engie Romania and its subsidiaries serve over 2.3 million customers, operate a 24,400-km distribution network, have 250 MW of green production capacity and employ more than 4,400 people.
