Romania is fully committed to implementing the common European vision for strengthening defense industry readiness by 2030, Defense Minister Radu Miruta said on Wednesday in Brussels during a meeting with European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, the talks took place against the backdrop of recent EU initiatives aimed at boosting defense capacity, increasing industrial competitiveness and accelerating Europe's preparedness for the 2030 objectives.
The discussion underscored the importance of implementing European measures aligned with the Defense Readiness Roadmap 2030.
Both officials stressed the need to reinforce Europe's industrial competitiveness and develop a balanced defense industrial and technological base capable of rapidly producing the necessary equipment by 2030. They also welcomed the European Commission's role in stimulating investment and operationalizing programs such as SAFE and the European Defense Industry Programme (EDIP).
Miruta highlighted the importance of fully leveraging the industrial potential of all member states when advancing EU support instruments, including those dedicated to Ukraine. He noted that efforts launched through SAFE must be followed by continued investment in existing and emerging infrastructure, implemented coherently and with attention to Ukraine's needs, which will be supported through the new Ukraine Support Loan.
"Romania is fully committed to implementing the common European vision for preparing the defense industry by 2030. We must move faster to develop a strong, innovative and competitive local defense industry, so that we can provide a geographically balanced response to the current security challenges," Minister Miruta declared.
The meeting also emphasized the relevance of flagship projects on the EU's eastern flank, particularly the operationalization of the Eastern Flank Watch, and the need to align these efforts with the specific security requirements of Black Sea states.
Military mobility was another key topic, with Miruta stressing that enabling the rapid movement of forces to the eastern flank remains a strategic priority. The upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework will play a crucial role in supporting the necessary infrastructure projects, with direct implications for strengthening NATO's deterrence and defense posture.
