AGERPRES special correspondent Florin Stefan reports: MEP Daniel Buda, a substitute member of the European Parliament's Special Committee on Housing, is urging economic actors and local authorities to identify land and mechanisms for developing residential construction, noting that significantly more European funding will be available in the next financial framework.

The EP Special Committee on the Housing Crisis (HOUS) adopted on Monday its first report proposing solutions to the EU's housing crisis, at a time when more than 10% of Europeans spend up to 40% of their income on housing and over 28% of young people under 30 still live with their parents.

"I am calling on all economic actors, as well as mayors and local authorities, to identify land and the mechanisms needed to develop residential construction, because substantial European funds will be available. Mayors must identify the sites and the public-private partnerships they can offer private developers to build these homes," the Liberal MEP told journalists in Strasbourg.

He added that EU funding will also cover infrastructure networks such as water, sewage and electricity.

"But these buildings cannot be developed unless mayors and local authorities do their part - registering the land, preparing technical documentation and urban plans needed to absorb European funds. If they wait until the money becomes available and still lack the technical projects, we will lose these opportunities, just as we have unfortunately lost other opportunities from the European Commission or from European structures," Buda warned.

He called for prompt action, adding that while money is already available, far larger allocations will come after 2027, and only those with projects prepared in advance will be able to access them.
