Minister of National Defence Mihai Fifor said on Thursday, after attending the military and religious ceremony organized at the Monument in Paulis (western Arad County, ed. n.) on the occasion of the Romanian Army Day, that today we cannot help thinking about the 29 of Romanian troops who have died since 1990 in operation theaters and about their families.
"I think with special respect and deep admiration of war veterans. I am very respectful of the veterans in the operation theaters. They all represent a great family of the Romanian Army that today celebrates its Day, 25 October. I could not help thinking with respect of those who died in the line of duty. I would like to remind you that after 1990, the Romanian Army lost 29 troops in operation theaters and we could not help thinking of them and of their families, with the same respect and great appreciation," Fifor said.
From Arad, Minister of Defence Mihai Fifor went to Carei, the last Romanian territory freed by the Romanian Army from the fascists, in order to take part in the celebrations organized there on the occasion of the Romanian Army Day.
The monument in Paulis, an artwork done in 1974 by sculptors Emil Viorel, Ionel Munteanu and architect Milos Cristea, was erected in memory of the Romanian soldiers who died in the battles of the Romanian Army in September 1944 for defending Mures Gorge, stopping the advance of the Hungarian Horthy-Nazi troops to the interior of the country. For a week, the Romanian soldiers resisted heroically against an enemy superior both in number and in fighting gear, until the big Romanian and Soviet units arrived in the area, causing the Hungarian Horthy-Nazi troops to withdraw. The efforts of the troops who formed the "Paulis Detachment" and the strategic importance of their victory were recognized as such in the history books of the World War II.
