The District 1 Court decided on Tuesday that former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu should remain under judicial control in the case in which he is being tried for legionary propaganda.
"It establishes the legality and validity of the judicial control measure, taken against the defendant Georgescu Călin, by ordinance no. 2226/221/P/2023/d1 of February 26, 2025 of the prosecutor within the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, as subsequently amended. It maintains the preventive measure of judicial control against the defendant Georgescu Călin, until a new verification, but no later than 60 days. It rejects, as unfounded, the request to revoke the preventive measure. With the right to appeal within 48 hours of communication," the court's decision states, which is not final.
Călin Georgescu was sent to trial on July 2 by the General Prosecutor's Office, accused of publicly promoting the cult of persons guilty of committing crimes of genocide, against humanity and war crimes, as well as of publicly promoting fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic ideas, conceptions or doctrines, in a continuous form (five material acts).
The investigators note in the indictment that, between June 16, 2020 and May 16, 2025, on several occasions (June 16, 2020, September 2020, October 2, 2021, September 1, 2024 and May 16, 2025), Călin Georgescu publicly promoted, through various means, fascist, legionary and xenophobic ideas, conceptions and doctrines.
"Specifically, it was noted that the defendant has affirmed over time, in interviews, statements or online posts, his pro-legionary ideological consistency/links in the non-legionary environment with promoters of the non-legionary ideology, with the aim of producing a change in perception regarding the historical framing of the Legionary Movement in an attempt to normalize and revitalize legionaryism and the historical figures connected to this ideology, meaning that he made several statements of a laudatory/praiseworthy nature towards Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Ion Antonescu, Ion Mota," the prosecutors claim.
