The 6th edition of the "Month of Romanian Sculptors", an event to be held February 19 - March 19, conceived under the aegis of the celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of the great late artist Constantin Brancusi, takes place this year in several cities in Romania and also in Chisinau, Moldova.
At the opening of the event on Wednesday, artist Vladlen Babcinetchi announced that the 2026 programme is conceived under the aegis of the 150th birth anniversary of Brancusi, which led to the expansion of the events at national and international level, in collaboration with numerous partner institutions.
"The Month of Romanian Sculptors will cover the entire country through exhibitions mounted not only in Iasi, but also in Targu Jiu, Constanta, Alba Iulia, Barlad and Chisinau. The current edition prepares an impressive cultural marathon, which includes 45 exhibitions and related events. The heart of Iasi will be transformed into an open-air museum," said Babcinetchi.
According to the schedule, dozens of monumental sculptures will be displayed in Iasi on the main pedestrian arteries, and also in spaces such as the City Hall, the Metropolitan Museum, the House of Museums, the Nicolae Gane Museum, the Palas Garden, the Palas Campus, the Iasi International Airport, the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and theGh. Asachi University.
At the same time, the public has the opportunity to explore, starting February 19, galleries and museums such as the National Athenaeum in Iasi, the Braunstein Palace, the Union Museum, UAPR Galleries, DANA Galleries, Arteast or the new Esplanada Gallery, where the Cluj artist Liviu Mocan will exhibit.
"The Romanian Sculptors' Month has an extended edition this year. In addition to the cities that wanted to organise events related to the Romanian Sculptors' Month, Iasi is turning into a true cultural hub. I think that for the first time Iasi has all the art galleries, both private and public, linked together to carry on contemporary art, but also a tribute to the memory of Constantin Brancusi and through all that the school he attended meant, whether we are talking about the warehouse in Constanta or Iftimie Barleanu, or, more recently, very young artists, artists who, starting from the age of 5, still create works inspired by Brancusi's modernity. I believe that this edition is a bridge between generations, between the actuality of contemporary sculpture that often seems disconnected from what happens in the public space, from what we expect to see as art. The works exhibited on the Stefan cel Mare Pedestrian Street or on Copou often make the public react," Maria Bilasovschi, chair of the Union of Fine Artists of Romania, Iasi branch, told AGERPRES.
Among the special guests who exhibit their latest creations are iconic artists such as Mircea Roman, Aurel Vlad, Marian Zidaru, and Mircea Cantor.
The teams of cultural mediators and curators will provide guided tours within the circuit of the Romanian Sculptors' Month, where it will be possible to discover monumental works signed by masters such as Ion Mandrescu, Neculai Paduraru, Dan Covataru, Virgil Scripcariu, and also by representatives of the new generations, such as Costin Ionita, Ovidiu Toader, Gabriel Blaga and Lucian Radu.
Inside CIAC, visitors will discover the new trends of contemporary art in dialogue with fundamental works by Milita Petrascu, Ovidiu Maitec, Ion Irimescu and Paul Vasilescu
According to organisers, three major exhibitions will be mounted in Targu Jiu, including the openings of the artists Laurentiu Mogosanu and Vladlen Babcineţchi from the C. Brancusi Research Centre. In Constanta, the event will be marked by placing a work by Aurel Vlad in front of the Art Museum, while in Barlad artists Costin Ionita and Bogdan Nueleanu will exhibit at the Vasile Pârvan" Museum. At the National Museum of the Union in Alba Iulia will take place the exhibition "Bessarabian Sculpture of the 21st Century."
In Chisinau, Mihai Topescu will exhibit at the National Museum of Art, and Mircea Cantor at at the Museum of History, all culminating in an impressive collective exhibition at the Brancusi Exhibition Centre in the capital city of Moldova.
