Romania is the only country in the European Union that has the profession of sustainable development expert, and soon we will also have specialists in the circular economy, state adviser and coordinator of the Department for Sustainable Development within the Romanian Government Laszlo Borbely told a specialist conference on Thursday.

'If we talk about sustainable development, I believe everyone wants a sustainable society. But there is a consensus here about how we achieve it and I want to tell you that a key word is balance. Each of us must ask ourselves: what kind of life do we have individually? Do we have a sustainable life or not? I represent the Romanian Government and for eight years we have had a new strategy. (...) At the Department for Sustainable Development, we started with six people, now we have 22. We coordinate the circular economy, together, of course, especially with the Ministry of Environment and other ministries. We have ten committees and yesterday we had two meetings on the circular economy. One through which we introduced the concept of circular economy into the school curriculum, in the seventh grade, explained in a way pupils can understand. If we talk about people, we have a new profession in Romania: sustainable development expert. No country in the European Union has this profession of sustainable development expert. Do you know how many experts we have trained in Romania over the past four years? 2,300, of which 180 hours through postgraduate courses, with specialisations. It is something phenomenal,' Borbely said.

According to the official, in the sustainable development area there will soon also be specialists in the circular economy.

'We will also have a sustainable development specialist, soon, exclusively for public administration. We will have specialists in the circular economy and we are already taking the necessary steps for approval from the Ministry of Labour. As for Artificial Intelligence, it is good not to become its servants, but to use it,' he explained.

Borbely also announced that in May a unique platform in Europe related to sustainable development will be launched.

'It is extraordinary what Artificial Intelligence can do. In May, we are launching a one-stop shop, a platform unique in Europe, on sustainable development. These are tools in anyone's hands so that we can have a more sustainable society. I want to tell you that we have 293 indicators by which we measure sustainability in Romania. So we have set up a platform that no one asked us for. We are now negotiating with the Ministry of Finance to take over our platform when we start these reporting processes. On the platform you will have all the news from the European Union in real time,' the official pointed out.

The National Sustainable Development Strategy 2030, the circular economy and the role of technology and digitalisation in implementing sustainability policies are among the topics discussed at the event 'Competitive Sustainability Summit - Strategy. Resilience. Growth. Community,' organised on Thursday in Bucharest.
