Former president Traian Basescu says, in a posting on his Facebook page, that if the National Tax Administration Agency (ANAF) wants to be correct it must publish also the list of state's debts to companies and individuals.
''So it would be correct. 1. The ANAF has published the list of companies with debts to the state. It is correct. 2. The list of individuals with debts to the state is to be published. It is correct. 3. If the ANAF wants to be correct all the way, it must publish also the list of state's debts to companies and individuals (e.g.: debts in terms of VAT refunds, non-payment of subsidies to farmers, lawsuits lost by the state vs. Romanian companies, lawsuits lost by the state on salary rights or compensation for the ECHR rulings, reimbursements set by courts on the abusive collection of the environmental tax paid by car owners etc). So it would be fair,'' Basescu wrote on Sunday on his Facebook page.
The ANAF published on May 11 the list of small debtors to the general consolidated budget, which shows that 144,829 small taxpayers and public institutions had debts bigger than 10,000 lei on March 31, 2016, with the total amount of debt being 77.11 billion lei, of which 81pct (62.46 billion lei) is irrecoverable arrears.
European Food, Hunedoara Energy Complex and the Romanian Television Company are the biggest debtors to the state budget, according to the data published on May 3 by the ANAF. According to the ANAF, 186 large taxpayers, with outstanding debts of over 100,000 lei, record total tax obligations of 2.60 billion lei, of which 1.92 billion lei principal payment obligations and 684 million lei in related obligations.
