A selection of icons of exceptional value, originating from renowned centres, including a notable piece created on Mount Athos, is featured in the Easter Auction dedicated to Sacred Art at Artmark.
According to an Artmark press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday, the auction is scheduled for 8 April, from 12:00, exclusively online, on the Artmark Live platform.
Icons created in Athonite monastic workshops are not merely works of art but objects of worship made in a liturgical spirit, following strict canons, as is the case of the wooden icon "St Anne and St Basil," dating from 1903, which has a starting price of 500 euros in the Artmark event. Such pieces are extremely rare on the art market.
Alongside this, the auction also highlights another piece of museum importance: the icon "All Saints' Sunday," which comes from a prestigious collection and has a starting price of 5,000 euros.
"Until 1964, the icon was part of the collection of the renowned physician and collector Dr Ioan Dumitrescu-Popovici, after which it was seized by the communist authorities and, for more than four decades, included in the patrimony of the National Museum of Art of Romania. Only in 2025 was the work returned to the family's heirs, thus re-entering the private circuit," Artmark mentions.
The selection is completed by glass icons from Transylvania - Nicula, Scheii Brasovului or the Fagaras area - signed by painters such as Ioan Costea Verman, Simion Poienaru, Ioan Pop or Nicolae Oancea, as well as rare wooden pieces, such as the icon "Saint Theodore Tiron," created in 1821 by painter Mincu in Arges. This last piece has a starting price of 600 euros in the Artmark auction.
The dedicated exhibition can be visited free of charge daily, from Monday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 20:00, in the days leading up to the auction.
