Distributie Energie Electrica Romania (DEER), Romania's electricity distribution network, on Tuesday signed a European funding contract worth approximately 97.9 million lei for the implementation of the project "Modernisation of the DEER remote control system. Implementation of an ADMS system."

According to a company press release, the contract was signed under the Sustainable Development Programme - Priority 4 - Action 4.5 "Smart energy systems and networks".

The project represents a strategic investment aimed at modernising the operational systems of the electricity distribution network through the deployment of an advanced Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) across the company's entire service area, covering 18 counties.

Through this investment, DEER will upgrade and expand the functionalities of its SCADA system, increasing network visibility and control, while improving the quality of services provided to users.

The implementation of the ADMS system brings significant benefits in the context of the energy transition, facilitating the increased integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the distribution network. At the same time, it enables more efficient management of the variability of renewable generation, optimisation of energy flows and an enhanced capacity of the network to accommodate new producers.

"This project represents a key step in the digitalisation of the distribution network and its transformation into a smart infrastructure capable of meeting the challenges of the energy transition. By implementing the ADMS system, we significantly enhance network monitoring and control capabilities, improve service quality for users and support the integration of renewable sources. Investments in technology, alongside the expertise of our team, are essential to building a modern, secure and sustainable energy system," said CEO Mihaela Rodica Suciu.

The project will also contribute to increased energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions, supporting national and European decarbonisation objectives in the energy sector.

The non-reimbursable funding amounts to 83.211 million lei from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 14.684 million lei from the national budget, through the Sustainable Development Programme.

"The signing of this contract marks an essential step in the digitalisation and modernisation of the distribution network, contributing to greater infrastructure reliability and the delivery of more efficient, secure and future-ready services," the release added.

Part of the Electrica Group, DEER is the largest electricity distribution operator in Romania, covering 18 counties and 40.7% of the country's territory (97,196 sq km). With over 120 years of tradition, the company provides services to approximately 4 million users through a distribution network exceeding 200,000 kilometres.
