"At this time, no changes in water quality are being recorded in monitored areas and no fish deaths have been reported. No water intakes for drinking purposes have been affected, the nearest being over 100 km downstream, in the Chiciu area, Calarasi county. The National Administration 'Romanian Waters' continues weekly monitoring of water quality in the context of the incident which occurred on the Danube caused by the sinking of two barges loaded with agricultural fertilisers," the institution stated in a post published on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, agerpres reports.
According to the quoted source, between 12 and 14 January, ammonium concentrations locally increased near the vessel at Zimnicea, but they are diluting rapidly and downstream intakes are not affected.
On 9 January 2026, port authorities in Zimnicea reported that a cargo barge carrying nitrogen-based ammonium fertilizer, which had previously run aground on a sandbank outside the main navigation channel, had begun to sink.
Further downstream, in Giurgiu, a second barge carrying potassium chloride was reported in a similar situation. Both vessels were transporting standard agricultural fertilisers, not industrial toxic substances.
