Wrestling: Ana Maria Rotaru, Ana Maria Puiu to fight for bronze at European Championships in Serbia

Romanian athletes Ana Maria Gianina Rotaru (50 kg category) and Ana Maria Puiu (59 kg category) will compete for the bronze medals on Thursday at the Under-23 European Wrestling Championships in Zrenjanin (Serbia).

Rotaru defeated Marija Spirkovska (North Macedonia) in the preliminary round of the 50 kg category and then overcame Azerbaijan's Asmar Jankurtaran in the quarterfinals. She lost the semifinal to Ukraine's Aida Kerimova and will face the winner of the bout between Mariam Grigalashvili (Georgia) and Svenja Jungo (Switzerland) in the bronze medal match.

In the 59 kg category, Ana Maria Puiu entered directly into the quarterfinals, where she defeated Ukraine's Iulia Pahniuk, but she was beaten in the semi-finals by Azerbaijan's Hiunai Hurbanova. In the bronze medal match she will meet either Russia's Ekaterina Radysheva or Bulgaria's Viktoria Ivailova Boinova.

Romania will also be represented in the women's competition by Nicoleta Bajan (53 kg), Alexandra Voiculescu (55 kg), Georgiana Lirca (57 kg), Tania Adam (62 kg) and Maria Magdalena Pantiru (65 kg).

In men's freestyle wrestling, Romania had three athletes. Daniel Marian Sandu (65 kg) was defeated in the preliminary round by Georgia's Saba Gambashidze. Benjamin Boejthe (70 kg) defeated Austria's Alexander Seiwald in the round of 16 but lost in the quarter-finals to Germany's Marcel Wagin. In the 125 kg category, Brian Samuel Techerean was defeated in the preliminaries by Azerbaijan's Yusif Dursunov, and later lost again in the repechage to Armenia's Hachatur Hachatrian.
