Roma are discriminated against in terms of access to employment, healthcare and public and social services, the Save Romania Union (USR) said on Friday, April 8, International Roma Day, Agerpres reports.
It added that as well as providing a good opportunity to become aware of the challenges that the Romany community continues to face in Romania, this is a moment of celebration.
"Even now, many school doors are still closed to Roma children. Many cases of racial violence targeting Roma continue to be reported. Roma are also discriminated against in terms of access to employment, healthcare and public and social services. It is important that we take on the mistakes of the past and work with the Roma community to understand and respect each other. Our role is to help the community gain access to its own culture and identity, and enjoy integration, dignity and respect, "USR wrote on Facebook.
It added that a country that values cultural diversity is a "better" country for all its citizens.
"USR believes in the unity of Romania and the various communities in our country, instead of a division between majority and minority. Collaboration among people regardless of ethnicity or nationality can save destinies especially amidst the ongoing Ukraine war and the difficult period we are going through."
