MPs of the Save Romania Union (USR) and the People's Movement Party (PMP) called on National Liberal Party (PNL) colleagues on Tuesday to sign the notification to the Constitutional Court (CCR) on the Administrative Code adopted by the Chamber of Deputies.
The motion, also supported by the non-affiliated MPs, was announced on Monday evening in the plenum of the Chamber of Deputies.
USR Chair Dan Barna said that, in its adopted form, the Administrative Code turns Romania into a feudal state.
"We need 4 signatures at the moment and we call on PNL, as no PNL member has signed this request, we call on them to grant us the 4 signatures because there is a much more important stake for Romania than to spoil the joy of some special pensions that I understand mayors in office are very enthusiastic about. We have today to collect the 4 signatures and our call on PNL is very firm to get involved in this democratic and necessary process for what an European administration in Romania means and not a Soviet type administration," Dan Barna said.
Asked if he had discussed with PNL Chairman Ludovic Orban, Barna said that, from what he understands, "PNL does not want to antagonize its own mayors."
According to PMP chairman, deputy Eugen Tomac, some PNL lawmakers who wanted to sign, along with PMP and USR, the notification to the CCR, "have been banned by the party from signing such an appeal."
"And the aspects related to absolutely unquestionable issues are those related to the situation that PSD [the Social Democratic Party, major at rule, e.n.] negotiated with UDMR [the Hungarian Democratic Union, e.n.] on the use of the minority language in the communities with over 20pct of the population," added Tomac .
PMP Deputy Marius Pascan argued that the formalisation of a new language of certain minorities in the public local administration is validated, contrary to Romania's Constitution.
The plenum of the Chamber of Deputies adopted on Monday the draft of the Administrative Code with 175 votes "in favour", 33 "against" and 15 abstentions.
