Two Greek supporters of the PAOK football team who were injured in a traffic accident in Romania on January 27 were airlifted on Thursday from Timisoara's 'Pius Brinzeu' Hospital to Thessaloniki's Papageorgiou Hospital, the Greek news agency ANA reports.
One of the two men has multiple injuries and is expected to remain hospitalized for several days, while the second is in much better condition and may not require hospitalization.
A Beechcraft King Air aircraft of the EKAB Air Medical Transport service took off on Thursday morning from Elefsina Military Airport, with a doctor and paramedics on board, bound for Timisoara in order to retrieve the injured patients. Upon arrival, and in cooperation with the medical staff of the Timisoara hospital, the two patients were transferred to the aircraft. The plane landed at 13:10 at Thessaloniki's 'Makedonia' International Airport, where two mobile medical units of the Greek national emergency medical service EKAB (Ethniko Kentro Amesis Voitheias, National Centre for Emergency Care), were waiting to transport them to Papageorgiou Hospital.
As for the third Greek national injured in the accident on Tuesday, the doctors at the Timisoara hospital decided, following a new assessment, that immediate surgery was required and that, for safety reasons, it was not possible to airlift him on Thursday. EKAB remains on standby so that he can be airlifted back to Greece as soon it is medically possible.
The medical airlift operation was coordinated by the Greek Health Ministry, which cooperated closely with the Romanian Health Ministry and the Greek Embassy in Bucharest from the first moment, while EKAB's Air Medevac Coordination Centre was in constant communication with the Timisoara hospital for the safe repatriation of the injured.
