Romania must analyze, together with European countries, what was already agreed upon between European leaders, the topic of participation in the Board of Peace announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, an initiative officially launched at the Davos Forum, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared on Friday.
Asked by Digi 24 if Romania has one billion dollars to be part of "Donald Trump's Board of Peace", Bolojan replied: "Romania must analyze, together with the European countries, what has already been agreed upon between the European leaders, regarding the participation in this Board. As to the amount of one billion dollars, of course, Romania has the possibility to allocate one billion dollars for one project or another, but we must calculate very well how we do this, because each leu that we allocate to one project or another must be as clearly as possible justified by the national interest and the economic situation we find ourselves in."
He added that domestically such a decision is one that will need a certain support, when asked if a decision in the Supreme Council for Country's Defense is needed for Romania's participation in the Board of Peace.
"It remains to be seen to what extent this participation is consistent with the other commitments that Romania has to participate in other forums and I am convinced that when this issue is raised, it will be a decision that will need a certain support, because in this period, starting from the Mercosur Agreement or other international agreements, in order to avoid internal disputes that can, as important subjects for Romania, be moved to an area that is more related to the internal political agenda than to our national interests, it is good for Romania to have an agreement. (...) On foreign policy issues, on major policies, in order to be relevant externally, it is good to have unified positions internally or to have a majority that supports a certain direction", stated Bolojan.
The prime minister gave as an example the accession to NATO, to the European Union, the project related to the accession to the OECD, projects for which there was and is internal support at the level of the entire political class.
"If there is no support, the partners, the organizations that follow what is happening, how the countries react to a project that I propose or another look at us with great reservation", added Bolojan.
According to him, the main decision will be up to President Nicusor Dan, who has the main competence in this area.
The prime minister was asked whether the ministers who represented Romania at the Davos Forum had a mandate regarding the participation in this event and what were the results they achieved.
"The ministers received my approval to travel and, also, on Monday I will have discussions - they returned today - so that we can see what contacts they have established and if there are aspects that are not just about personal contacts, but about projects that are related to Romania", said Bolojan.
