The Social Democratic Party (PSD) is demanding that state institutions investigate the information related to the foreign financing of the street protests, a PSD press release issued for AGERPRES on Tuesday announced.
"PSD is demanding that state institutions urgently investigate the information of exceptional gravity that surfaced in the public space regarding the foreign financing of the street protests and the premeditation of violent actions at the 10 August rally. The citizens of Romania, especially the good-faith participants in these rallies, have the right to know the whole truth behind these street movements, who the authors of the public manipulations and fabrications are, who paid and the real purpose was the provocation of an emotional reaction against the institutions of the Romanian state and the constitutional order. PSD considers that the pieces of information in the press on the 10 August rally contain reasonable clues regarding subversive actions meant to weaken the national security and the authority of the Romanian state," the PSD release reads.
According to the quoted source, such issues cannot be left uninvestigated by the relevant bodies.
"It is not a political dispute but a major risk for Romania. PSD also feels that it is necessary to establish a legal framework to ensure the complete transparency of the sources of financing and the interests of those who initiate, maintain and amplify street protests in Romania," reads the press release.
PSD Chair Liviu Dragnea said on 9 September that he had information that the 10 August events were financed from abroad.
He told private TV broadcaster Antena 3 that proof could be made public that the events in Victoriei Square were financed from abroad.
"There are enough elements to talk about an attempted coup. The protests were funded, apparently from abroad. I am absolutely convinced that next week information will emerge about how these protests were funded, about the fact that they were organized in a paramilitary manner, that they wanted - and that was actually seen - to occupy the government headquarters and permanently provoked the gendarmes," Dragnea said.
