Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan begins a two-day official visit to Germany on Tuesday, at the invitation of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

'The Prime Minister's visit takes place in the context of the excellent relationship between Romania and Germany which, although not formally based on a proper Strategic Partnership, has a strategic character and focuses on areas of current and future interest such as economic and trade cooperation, European affairs and security,' the Government said in a press release.

Germany is Romania's most important trading partner, accounting for over 20% of total Romanian exports. In 2024, bilateral trade amounted to around EUR 42 billion, with exports worth EUR 19 billion and imports of EUR 23 billion, the Government specified.

'At the end of 2024, Germany was the main foreign investor in the Romanian economy, maintaining its dominant position. Companies resident in Germany hold investments in Romania of over EUR 18.66 billion, representing almost 15% of the total stock of foreign direct investment,' the quoted source mentioned.

During the visit, alongside the meeting with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with whom he will hold a joint press conference, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet Vice-President of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) Andrea Lindholz, leader of the CDU parliamentary group Jens Spahn and President of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.

'With a significant economic component, the agenda of the visit also includes meetings with President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry Peter Adrian and Director General of the Federation of German Industries Tanja Gonner,' the press release also reads.

At the same time, the Prime Minister will meet President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany Josef Schuster, in the context of marking on 27 January the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Bolojan will pay a visit to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and will meet Director of the Foundation of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe Uwe Neumarker.

The head of the Executive will meet representatives of the Romanian community at the Romanian Embassy in Germany. Romanians constitute the fourth largest foreign community in Germany, with approximately 910,000 people. Over 90,000 of them have received German citizenship. They are joined by around 500,000 ethnic Germans originating from Romania, well integrated in Germany, the Government pointed out.

The delegation accompanying Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan will include Minister of National Defence Radu Miruta, Head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery Mihai Jurca, Chief of the Defence Staff Gheorghita Vlad, MP Ovidiu Gant, representative of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, State Secretary in the Prime Minister's Chancellery Dragos Hotea and State Adviser with the Prime Minister's Chancellery Raul Gutin.
