President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday that Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) leader George Simion, accompanied by a large delegation, was not welcomed 'by anyone' in the United States of America.
He said that this is 'relevant' for these people's credibility worldwide.
The clarifications came after the President was asked whether he had any information regarding the accusations of a businessman from the United States, who claimed that George Simion had lobbied for Romania to be removed from the Visa Waiver programme.
'I do not have any more information than you do specifically on this matter, however what is relevant, in my view, is that the same Romanian politician thanked the United States 8-9 months ago for removing us from this programme and also that the same politician, together with a large delegation, was not welcomed by anyone in the United States. That is relevant for the credibility these people have worldwide,' the President told a press conference held after the informal meeting of the leaders of the European Council, which took place at Alden-Biesen Castle in Belgium.
Regarding possible participation in the Board of Peace initiated by President Donald Trump, on 19 February, Nicusor Dan said he had also discussed this matter with other European leaders.
'Because at present there are, and I estimate that for many months from now there will continue to be, inconsistencies between the Charter of this organisation and the international Charter to which we are party, we cannot have any status other than that of observer. As the invitation was issued 4-5 days ago, it was addressed to members and at the moment discussions are under way - and having just come from this meeting, I have discussed with other leaders and they are doing the same thing, facing the same constraints that we have - we are discussing what the status of observers at this meeting could be and this is an answer that the organisers must give us and depending on that we will make a decision,' the President said.
