The president of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP), Adrian Tutuianu, met on Thursday, at the institution's headquarters, with the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia in Bucharest, Sami Nagga, for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the electoral field.
According to a press release from the AEP, "the dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the electoral field, based on the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the two institutions on February 11, 2020, which constitutes the central pillar of the exchange of experience and good practices between Romania and the Republic of Tunisia".
Also, on this occasion, the perspective of collaboration opened by the establishment, in Tunisia, of a Center dedicated to archiving and developing comparative studies and experiences in the electoral field, under the aegis of the Supreme Independent Authority for Elections (ISIE), was discussed, the cited source mentions.
Ambassador Sami Nagga said that the Center would include a section dedicated to electoral systems in other countries, including Romania, requesting in this regard the support of the AEP for providing the necessary documentary resources.
The president of the AEP welcomed the initiative and expressed the institution's availability to contribute to expanding the Center's resources by providing documentation on electoral legislation and the IT systems used in managing electoral processes in Romania.
At the same time, Adrian Tutuianu presented the priorities of his mandate regarding the revision of the legislation on the organization and functioning of the AEP, the electoral legislation as a whole and the regulatory framework regarding the financing of political parties and electoral campaigns.
He stated that a coherent, predictable and standardized legislative framework would simplify procedures, reduce costs, increase administrative efficiency and strengthen public trust in the electoral process, the AEP also specifies.
The AEP president also mentioned, regarding the conduct of the recent elections in the two countries, that he noted "a series of common challenges generated, in particular, by fragmented legislation, the very tight deadlines of the electoral calendar and limited financial resources, which may represent topics for analysis within the exchange of experience and lessons learned, with the aim of improving the electoral architecture in the two states".
"The discussions also aimed at the coordination of the two electoral management bodies (EMBs) within the international forums of which they are members, namely the World Association of Electoral Bodies (A-WEB) and the Francophone Electoral Competence Network (RECEF)" AEP also indicated.
According to the cited source, the meeting takes place in the context of the parliamentary elections that will take place in the Republic of Tunisia in 2027.
Adrian Tutuianu reaffirmed the Permanent Electoral Authority's commitment to providing technical assistance in its areas of competence, both through online consultations and by hosting study visits by experts from the counterpart institution in Tunisia.
AEP also informed that the meeting is "in line with courtesy visits", the ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia congratulating Adrian Tutuianu on taking over the mandate as president of the Permanent Electoral Authority.
