The Senate and the Chamber of Deputies convened on Wednesday in a joint sitting to decide on the letter from President Nicusor Dan regarding the temporary deployment of U.S. military equipment and forces in Romania.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan is also attending the sitting.
The sitting is chaired by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, who announced that 337 out of a total of 463 parliamentarians registered their presence.
The work is being carried out in person and online.
The agenda includes the letter from President Nicusor Dan on the approval by Parliament, pursuant to art. 4 para. (2) of Law no. 291/2007, republished, with subsequent amendments and completions, of some requests of the Prime Minister of Romania, after consulting the Supreme Council for National Defense on March 11, 2026.
Also on the agenda there are two briefings by the President regarding the approval of the Ministry of Internal Affairs forces that are sent to missions and operations outside the national territory in 2026 and, respectively, the approval of the entry and stationing in Romania of the NATO Reaction Force (Allied Reaction Force/ARF) or its transit of the national territory, for the purpose of preparing and/or conducting military operations, if applicable, in 2026, as well as the mandate of the minister of National Defense to approve any changes in the structure/composition of the ARF, which may occur in relation to the planning data transmitted by NATO for the year 2026.
Previously, the Defense Committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate approved, by majority vote, the decision to allow, according to the President's letter, the presence on the Mihail Kogalniceanu Base of some United States capabilities, which will be deployed for a determined period.
