The total number of non-resident tourists accommodated in Romania's collective tourist accommodation establishments in 2021 was 837,700, with their expenses amounting to 1.97 billion lei, and average expenditure was 2,352.1 lei per person, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) reported on Thursday, Agerpres reports.
According to INS, the total number of non-resident tourists accommodated in the collective tourist accommodation establishments in Q4 2021, was 222,400, with their expenses amounting to 538.3 million lei.
Business trips (including participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions) were the main reason for the stay of 53.1% of non-resident tourists arriving in Romania in 2021, and their expenses made up 55.7% of total expenses.
Of the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania in the previous year, 46.9% travelled for private purposes, with their expenses making up 44.3% of the total expenses. Special purpose travel includes vacation, shopping, cultural and sporting events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religious pilgrimage, transit, and other activities.
Of the total business expenses in 2021, the highest share went on accommodations (48.1%), and the highest in demand accommodation type was breakfast included (89.8% of the total accommodation expenses ). Expenditures of non-resident tourists in restaurants and bars were 18.4%, and those for shopping accounted for 16.2% of total business expenditures.
Of the total shopping expenses, 46.2% were for the purchase of food and beverages, and 29.5% for the purchase of gifts and souvenirs.
Car rental expenditures accounted for 64.0% of total transportation expenditures, and expenditures for access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos, game rooms accounted for 36.3% of total recreational expenditures.
Out of the total number of non-residents arriving in Romania in 2021, 39.0% came with travel agencies, 38.5% organised their stay on their own, 17.4% used other ways of organising trips, while 5.1% organised their trip both on their own and through a travel agency.
The main modes of transportation used to arrive in Romania in 2021 was the plane, used by 76.7% of the total number of tourists, while 17.2% used their own cars, 4.0% coaches and buses, and 2.1% arrived by other modes of transport (train, river boat, rented car, motorcycle, etc.
