Mircea Lucescu made a decisive contribution to the standout of Romanian football, inspired generations of players and was a true ambassador of Romania on the great stadiums of the world, President Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday.
He says that Mircea Lucescu's death is a piece of news that deeply saddens Romania.
"One of the most respected and long-lived figures in the history of Romanian and European football, Mircea Lucescu leaves us as a legacy much more than the sporting excellence with which his name will always be associated. He leaves us the example of a life dedicated to the passion for football and the power to move forward, despite difficulties, to achieve performance," the head of state said.
Nicusor Dan emphasizes that, for over six decades, as a player for the national team and traditional clubs, and later as an elite coach, Mircea Lucescu excelled at the highest level.
"With remarkable tenacity and tactical intelligence, he won important trophies and formed teams, but above all characters," the president said.
He sends his condolences to his family, loved ones and all those who admired him.
Mircea Lucescu died on Tuesday, at the age of 80. He was hospitalized at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital.
