Football legend Gheorghe Hagi said, in a message posted on social media, that Mircea Lucescu, who died on Tuesday evening, was more than a coach to him and that an important part of what he became in football is due to him.
"Today one of the greatest legends of Romanian football left us, a personality of world football who made us proud in every moment of his life. He gave me confidence at the beginning of my journey and paved the way for me to great performance. He was more than a coach to me, he was my mentor, teacher, a man who believed in me and an important part of what I became in football is due to him. Thank you for everything, Sir Mircea! Always in my heart! Condolences to the family", Hagi said.
Gheorghe Hagi is the first coach on the list of proposals of the Technical Commission of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) for the vacant position of national team coach. In the next stage, the FRF Executive Committee is expected to mandate FRF president Razvan Burleanu to start negotiations and subsequently appoint the new coach.
On Tuesday evening, after the announcement of Mircea Lucescu's death, the Romanian Football Federation announced that it is suspending the process of appointing the new coach for an indefinite period. "In this context full of suffering for the entire Romanian football family, the FRF announces that the process of appointing a new coach will be suspended for an indefinite period," the FRF noted on its official website.
The great coach Mircea Lucescu died on Tuesday, at the age of 80.
