The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted on Monday a round of Romanian-Canadian consultations between delegations led by Ana Tinca, Secretary of State for Strategic and Global Affairs, and Isabelle Poupart, Director General for European Affairs within Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.

The discussions focused on the main areas of the Romania-Canada Enhanced Partnership, including security, defence, energy, economy, trade, migration and academic cooperation, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The same source revealed that the two officials welcomed the excellent level of bilateral relations, which confirms the status of both countries as trusted partners committed to effectively addressing common challenges. The importance of continuing close cooperation to promote shared interests and to strengthen the security and prosperity of both countries was also highlighted.

A key point of the consultations was the continued support for Ukraine and the need to strengthen NATO's Eastern Flank. The parties discussed the regional situation in the Black Sea, as well as in the Far North, and examined measures and instruments tailored to the specific features of these two regions, with the overall aim of reinforcing allied cooperation and the deterrence and defence posture.

The priority of Romania-Canada cooperation in the field of nuclear energy was also reaffirmed, particularly regarding projects at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the shared interest in capitalising on the experience gained in operating CANDU technology in cooperation with other interested states, the press release reads.

At the same time, the Romanian side welcomed the deepening of the Canada-EU partnership, including Canada's participation in the SAFE initiative. During the discussions, officials also addressed initiatives aimed at ensuring funding for the defence industry, both for large companies and for small and medium-sized enterprises, with a view to strengthening production capacities and the resilience of supply chains, the source adds.

The consultations also included an exchange of views on managing migration and mobility issues in a constructive and solution-oriented manner.

Other topics covered included the continuation of high-level political dialogue, Romania's accession to the OECD, and cooperation within the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.
