The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) appreciated European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker's public intervention, in which he acknowledges the capacity of democratic and constitutional mechanism in Romania to make its own decisions, to be in full agreement with the European values, thus creating the premises of a balanced dialogue with the Romanian authorities, a press release of MAE sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday informs.
According to the release, Juncker's message responds thus to the invitation launched by the presidencies of Parliament's two Chambers and Romania's current Prime Minister Viorica Dancila, in her investiture speech in Romania's Parliament.
Moreover, MAE appreciates that the message also conveys both Romania's right to join the Schengen area and the possibility for the recommendations of the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification to be fulfilled by the end of the current Commission's mandate, due to expire in 2019.
"The discussions carried out in Brussels reveal the fact that Romania has accomplished in the last months all the necessary demarches for the adequate preparation of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, having the ability to exercise its future role in good conditions," the quoted source specifies.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated on Wednesday in Brussels, at the joint press conference with President Klaus Iohannis, that if the justice laws in Romania remain as adopted by Parliament, the discussions on the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) and the Schengen accession will be carried out "in other terms".
"If the laws of Romania remain as adopted by Parliament, the discussions on the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism and the Schengen accession will be put in other terms. We await the decisions of the Constitutional Court and if everything goes well, we must ensure Romania its place in the Schengen area, because Romanians do not deserve to be treated as second-class citizens," said Jean-Claude Juncker.
