Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Friday that the aid Romania granted to Ukraine last year was around 50 million euros, through a budgetary allocation to NATO.

"One of the things being circulated is that, while there is a financial difficulty in Romania, we support Ukraine with very large amounts. This is a lie. When we allocated support amounts last year, for example, if we remember, at the end of the year, we issued a press release. (...) I think the aid Romania granted to Ukraine under this financial support program was around 50 million euros," Bolojan stated on the Europa FM radio station, when asked about the amount of the financial package granted by Romania to help Ukraine and how much this allocation contributed as a percentage to the budget deficit.

The Prime Minister specified that it was a budgetary allocation to NATO, underlining the importance of this initiative for national security.

"At NATO, from these sums that were collected by all European countries, weapons were purchased to support Ukraine. (...) We need to discuss some things very openly. (...) The most important thing for a country, including Romania, is national security. It is not seen as long as things are quiet. (...) And, whether we like it or not, it is a reality that Ukraine, through what it does, through the resistance it has in the face of Russian aggression, practically defends this eastern flank, including Romania, from what can happen. (...) I believe that Romania and the other European countries, along with the United States, have acted correctly in these years by trying to practically defend their border and support a country that was attacked, whatever one may say", specified Ilie Bolojan.
