The parliamentary groups of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) decided on Tuesday to keep in place the parliamentary cooperation protocol with the PSD - ALDE ruling alliance, Union Chairman Kelemen Hunor announced.
"We decided by vote to keep this parliamentary cooperation protocol in place under the well-known conditions, and in this situation we will see how to dialogue as of next week on each particular project," Kelemen Hunor said at the end of the meeting of the UDMR joint parliamentary groups.
He argued the decision by the current situation in Parliament, by the attitude of the opposition leaders, noting that it would be extremely harmful if UDMR were to isolate itself in Parliament, and that it was the ruling coalition representatives who had shown openness to dialogue.
"Despite all discontents and the current situation in the Parliament of Romania, and also considering the attitude of the opposition leaders in these days, we concluded that at such a time, UDMR's isolating itself in the Romanian Parliament of 2018 would be extremely, extremely unfavorable for everybody, for us included, but actually for the entire Romanian society. Those who opened the way to dialogue, those who asked for a collaboration, were those in the coalition, in the spring session of [Parliament]," said Kelemen Hunor.
With just 30 MPs, UDMR cannot get its legislative initiatives through, he claimed, and on the other hand "it's quite often that the coalition needs the Union's support."
