The President of the Romanian Academy, Ioan-Aurel Pop, stated on Thursday, at the founding meeting of the Romanian Academic Council (CAR), that, through the transformations that have taken place in the Republic of Moldova, it is the most important moment in history in which we can begin the action of unification.
In this context, Pop spoke about the difficulty of establishing a new branch of the Romanian Academy in Chisinau.
"We are not succeeding in a country where 82% of the inhabitants declare themselves Romanian or Moldovan and where, by the Constitution, the language of the country is Romanian. (...) And we are struggling because we do not have the legislative framework, because in the 2001 law, that is our law, someone wrote that the Romanian Academy has three branches and listed them in the law, which is a restriction. In my opinion, the law should write, the Romanian Academy operates with the center in Bucharest and has branches. Where I want it. And in the statutes and regulations it should write about them. Well, we have been struggling for so long and we are not succeeding. Now (...) we have somehow started these things in Parliament, but they are going very slowly. If the Academy Law were to change, as I proposed... I did not propose a new law, because a new law would have required another 30 years for us, because "We don't know how to start things, we don't know exactly how to do it," Ioan-Aurel Pop told the presidents of CAR member institutions.
The Hungarian colleagues, the historian pointed out, did it in one year, when they established a branch in Cluj.
"I know them, I speak their language. I know them, I know how they did it. We can't do it. I hope, now, together with all of us, here, that we can succeed in pushing for, in amending the law, so that we can set up a branch in Chisinau. The president (Ion Tighineanu, president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova - editor's note) assures me that, of his colleagues, about 80% would like to be part of the Romanian Academy. Of course, for this, the Romanian state must make an effort of several kinds. I won't say what it is now. But it can't be otherwise, without an effort by the Romanian state, Little Romania beyond the Prut, which has struggled for so long that we are surprised that it still exists... That is why, I believe that together, as we are here now, giving an example of the Romanian Academic Council, that we wanted to "Let's call it that, but it's still there," said Ioan-Aurel Pop.
The President of the Academy advocated the start of the "unification action", taking advantage of the "transformations that took place in the Republic of Moldova", following the example of the union of Bessarabia with Romania on April 9, 1918 (March 27, old style), which was achieved "through cultural and scientific unity".
"At this moment, through the transformations that have taken place in the Republic of Moldova, it is the most important moment in history in which we can begin the action of unification. And the action of unification began - the old one - through cultural and scientific unity. And if we set an example - and we are here together, no one called us to unite. That is what we would like, from our Romanian soul. If we can do this, society will understand that things can move forward. Otherwise, we will need another 50 years to keep thinking," said Ioan-Aurel Pop.
The Romanian Academy hosted the launch ceremony of the Romanian Academic Council (CAR), formed by the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, on Thursday. The two founding academies and four branch academies in Romania are members of the CAR.
The Memorandum, the Founding Agreement and the CAR Statute were signed by the presidents of the six member institutions: the Romanian Academy, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, the Academy of Legal Sciences of Romania, the Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania, the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences "Gheorghe Ionescu-Sisesti" and the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania.
Also on Thursday, the first meeting of the Coordination Council took place, during which the management structures will be elected.
