Insurance companies paid out RON 209 million (EUR approx. 42 million) in 2025 to repair insured homes, up 14% year-on-year, according to data from the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF), cited in a press release by the National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Romania.

According to the source, the total is 14% higher than in 2024, when compensation payments amounted to RON 183 million.

"More than 94% of this total - RON 197 million - was paid under voluntary home insurance policies, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year. These policies provide extended protection, covering a wide range of risks, including fires, floods and other unforeseen events," the press release said.

At the same time, interest among Romanians in protecting their homes is rising, with the number of homes covered by voluntary insurance increasing by 7% in 2025 compared to the previous year.

"These developments confirm the essential role of voluntary insurance in protecting personal assets and ensuring rapid financial support in the event of unforeseen incidents. Given the increasing frequency of risks, from extreme weather events to fires, expanding insurance coverage is becoming a necessity rather than an option," said Alexandru Ciuncan, President and Director General of UNSAR.

In turn, Alina Barbulescu, Coordinator of General Insurance Sections within UNSAR, noted that 'behind these compensation payments are tens of thousands of families who have managed to rebuild their homes after unforeseen events'.

In Romania, voluntary home insurance policies can be taken out for properties already covered by mandatory PAD insurance.

Voluntary policies provide broader protection, covering the real value of buildings and/or belongings, and may include damages caused by natural disasters as well as other risks such as fires, explosions, storms, falling objects, flooding caused by failures in water, sewage, air conditioning or heating systems, boiler breakdowns, and damage to electronic or household appliances.

In addition, a range of tailored protection solutions is available depending on the types of assets owned, including coverage for liability towards neighbours in the event of accidental damage.

Established in 1994, UNSAR represents 22 insurance and reinsurance companies, accounting for over 90% of the local insurance market. Its activity focuses on representing the interests of insurers and reinsurers in Romania, contributing to improvements in the legislative framework, promoting the insurance sector and supporting the sustainable development of the industry both domestically and internationally.
