President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Sorin Grindeanu said on Monday that he will not accept the Government taking responsibility separately for the package of measures on administration and the one on economic recovery, adding that within the coalition an attempt was made to decouple the two packages of measures.

"We met today in the coalition on an agenda discussed last week, related to the budget, to the discussions which took place at the Ministry of Finance on the economic recovery package and to a certain timetable for the simultaneous assumption of responsibility for the two packages, one on administration and the other on economic recovery, as well as the timetable for the approval of the budget. (...) I want to tell you something very clearly, and I said it today in the coalition as well, and my point of view was also reinforced by Mr Kelemen Hunor: I am telling you that the PSD will under no circumstances give up this economic recovery package. (...) It is clear that Romania also needs something like this, because for six to seven months we have been talking only about cuts, laying people off, restructuring, VAT increases and tax increases. These things must stop and we must also deal with the other side. This economic recovery package is extremely important from our point of view and is essential if there is a desire to continue with the PSD within this coalition. (...) There was an attempt today to decouple the two packages, but I believe things were well understood: both packages must be approved at the same time," Grindeanu said on Romania TV private television station.

He added that it is easy to reduce the deficit only through tax and duty increases and by cutting investments.

"Deficit reductions done properly are also achieved through economic growth, and what the PSD proposes through these measures would implicitly lead to economic growth. (...) I am absolutely convinced, and I agree with President Nicusor Dan, that there was no need to increase VAT," the PSD leader said.
