USR president Dominic Fritz pleaded on Monday for investments in renewable energy, so that Romania can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
"We believe that this is a moment in which this government must show responsibility towards the fuel price crisis. We support the measures proposed by the government, but which are measures for a limited period, short-term measures. USR sees very clearly that Romania must invest in energy resilience, in our energy independence and that means that we must become much more independent from fossil resources, from oil, and we must invest massively in renewable resources", Fritz told a press conference held on Monday at the Palace of Parliament.
In the opinion of the USR leader, the impact of the proposed measures to limit the increase in fuel prices must be analyzed "very carefully". He mentioned that the measures that affect the budget will ultimately be borne by the taxes and duties paid by Romanians.
"Other measures that will impact the budget will also be paid from their own pockets, because there is no money box that is not also fed by Romanians' money. That is precisely why we must be careful not to take from one pocket to put in another. The best way to protect Romanians from such energy shocks and such geopolitical shocks is to have energy independence and invest in renewable resources," he emphasized.
According to the USR president, in case of skyrocketing price increases, excise duty or VAT reductions can be taken into account.
"Any measure we take will be paid for with people's money and we must ensure that a pensioner from Suceava will not pay for the filling of a rich architect's SUV from Bucharest. (...) We must analyze the impact of the current measures and what other measures are possible, but we will not agree to finance the consumption of the rich with the money of the poor", he said.
